San Diego Sounds

We all have a favorites or only follow one sound. Reggae fans are typically loyal to their sounds, especially when a sound clash (dee-jays battling for a rank) is happening.

San Diego has approximately 15 sounds, but I currently only know six or seven that actively play. So I thought I’d list the three I think that a lot of reggae fans follow and offer the following poll:

Who is the best Sound System out of the following?(poll)

Inside of Reggae World

Trade Roots Reggae is not the only place that offers the reggae lovers the cultural shopping experience, Reggae World has been on the block for over eight years.

Reggae World

Reggae World2540 University Ave.San Diego, CA 92110619-296-5989

This small, but quaint store offers everything from clothes to hats, to incenses and oils and of course music, vinyl nonetheless. I immediately smelled the fresh burning of incense and the fans carried the light scents of the oils that are for sale. This day, roots reggae wasn’t being played, it was an African movie, “Prosperity,” that echoed throughout the stores wired sound system.

Zulu, the owner, was more than kind enough to allow me to peruse his store highlighting the products that he carries for fans. Too shy to be filmed nor photograph, Zulu has covered many aspects of the culture including hair products for dreadlocks. Those of you who are into skin and body products, he offers Shea Butter, in its natural form.

Music, he has a lot of that, there is a vinyl section as well as a cd section for dee-jays to shop from. The hardest things to find in San Diego are reggae movies. He has them, a lot of them.

In between customers, I was allowed to take the footage below to show what you’ve been missing, see Reggae World for yourself.
